Industry Supporting Cyber Security Education

Cyber security professionals can provide real life insight into working in the industry.

Industry can help inspire the next generation by providing an experience of what it is like working in the sector and introducing them to various career options. They can also support educators with up-to-date industry knowledge and expertise.

Get involved in education and skills development

Some examples of how you can get involved:

  • providing careers talks in schools, colleges, universities and youth clubs
  • mentoring students or offering work placements/internships – https://www.apprenticeships.scot/for-employers/
  • co-delivering sessions on specific technical topics, for example as part of a qualification being delivered in a school or a college
  • recruiting and mentoring apprentices
  • providing tailored support for individuals with particular barriers, such as for autistic people, people returning to the workforce or changing careers
  • providing input at events or courses, for example the Cyber Christmas Lectures or CyberFirst residential courses
  • writing challenges for use in national competitions, for example the CyberFirst Girls Competition
  • becoming a partner of the CyberFirst programme

Industry in the classroom

Skills Development Scotland have been working with cyber security professionals and teachers to create and deliver cyber security lessons for pupils.

The activities get learners hands-on with real security tools and techniques. Cyber security experts will work alongside experienced classroom teachers to deliver an engaging and interactive learning experience. These activities will allow industry technologists to share their skills, knowledge and work experiences with Scotland’s next generation of cyber security specialists.
