NCSC publishes new MFA and respond & recover guidance
The UK’s National Cyber Security Centre has produced updated guidance on multi-factor authentication (MFA) for organisations, and added a new ‘Respond & recover’ online resource, with advice for both individuals and organisations who have experienced an online scam or cyber attack.
Major Police Scotland reforms include new cyber and fraud division
Wide-ranging reforms at Police Scotland will see the force establish a new cyber command unit and utilise artificial intelligence technology to address increased online crime.

Car retailer Arnold Clark has provided a substantial donation to support the Cyber and Fraud Hub’s first two years. The Hub was launched earlier this year by Cyber and Fraud Centre Scotland.
SCVO to host Trustees Week conference
SCVO’s conference for charity trustees, taking place in Edinburgh in
November, will include an opportunity for trustees to have a one-to-one advice
session with a cyber resilience expert.

Wifi hack at UK train stations linked to insider attack
Glasgow Central and Edinburgh Waverley were among train stations across the UK impacted by a cyber attack last month in which those logging into Wi-Fi were served a message about terror attacks in Europe.
UK Government launches cyber security competition
The UK Government has launched the UK Cyber Team Competition, which gives 18 to 25-year-olds the chance to win a place on the UK Cyber Team and the opportunity to represent the UK in international cyber competitions as well as access to training, support and networking opportunities The application process is open until 20 November 2024 on the competition website.
UK issues warning over Iran cyber threat
In an advisory published with US partners, the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) warned that cyber attackers working for Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) are using social engineering to access victims’ personal and business accounts online.
UK to lead international AI safety discussion
The UK will host a follow-up to the AI summit in San Francisco in November, which will see AI developers from across the world meet to review progress against commitments made at a similar gathering in Seoul earlier this year.
Majority in UK believe cyber is next step in modern warfare
A new survey from Nineteen Group found 72% of people in the UK believe cyber warfare is likely to be the next step in modern combat.
Sellafield fined for cyber security breaches
Sellafield Ltd, which runs the Sellafield nuclear site in Cumbria, has been fined £332,500 for cyber security shortfalls.
Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine restored after hack
The Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine – a tool that provides access to archived websites – is back online after suffering both a data breach and a DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) attack.
