Trained staff are vital to your organisation's cyber resilience

People are often the first and strongest point of contact when it comes to security. It’s important that you offer appropriate cyber resilience training and awareness raising arrangements for your workforce.

This section aims to provide support businesses, charities and individuals with signposting and access to simple, free and trusted training resources and guidance to protect and keep themselves safe online at work and in their personal lives.

Top Tips for Staff

The National Cyber Security Centre’s (NCSC) ‘Top Tips for Staff’ free e-learning training package helps you get confident with what cyber security means for you and includes steps you can take to stay safe online.

The training is primarily aimed at SMEs, charities and the voluntary sector, but can be applied to any organisation, regardless of size or sector. It’s been designed for a non-technical audience (who may have little or no knowledge of cyber security), with tips that complement any existing policies and procedures.

  2. Creating strong passwords
  3. Securing your devices
  4. Reporting incident

Training for small organisations and charities

NCSC’s cyber security training demonstrates how to improve your organisation’s resilience and will cover five key areas.

You’ll explore each of these topics by navigating several encounters a small business owner may have with cyber security over the course of a week, Monday to Friday. Staff will answer questions, identify possible issues and make suggestions to prevent and tackle common cyber security challenges.

Training for School Staff

This NCSC training highlights some of the main threats that schools face and provides guidance and advice to protect against them. It has been designed to be accessible by any staff member and no prior technical knowledge is required. On completion, staff can download a certificate to indicate they have taken part.

The NCSC has produced a number of practical tips and resources aimed at school staff.

Cyber Aware Workers Toolkit

The Cyber Aware Workers Toolkit is an interactive resource to provide knowledge and awareness for all workers in Scotland. This toolkit is ideal for any tutor, learning rep, member or worker in Scotland who is keen to develop their own skills and wants to share this knowledge with colleagues.

Progress through the activity below. It will take around 25 minutes in total.

This toolkit was developed by Scottish Union Learning and Digital Skills Education on behalf of the CyberScotland Partnership.


Using the toolkit in a group:

With the facilitator guide, non-technical staff can use the toolkit to provide high-quality and up-to-date cyber resilience training based on trusted guidance and best practice.

  1. Download the facilitator guide for tips and guidance on how to run your session.
  2. Before leading a session, complete the activity yourself to get familiar with it.
  3. Use the guide to run your session. You just need to play the video, and use the conversation prompts given in the guide.

Provide feedback by completing a short evaluation on your experience using the toolkit.

Section

The Scottish Government Cyber Resilience Unit have produced an interactive staff Training Guide which complements the NCSC’s training package, ‘Stay Safe Online: Top Tips for Staff’.

This training guide is aimed at those who lead on training in an organisation and helps them teach non-technical staff the cyber fundamentals, providing access to practical exercises to support training.

The guide includes:

  • Cyber topics to teach your staff
  • Resources and links to training available
  • Awareness raising materials from trusted partners
